In addition to its many graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó, has much to offer local residents.
For instance, the entire university campus has been designated an arboretum. Visitors can discover the university's wide variety of trees, shrubs, and native desert plants through an easy-to-follow, self-guided tour. Brochures are available from the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History, the Richard Tam Alumni Center, and the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó grounds department. A drought-tolerant demonstration garden is located at the main entrance to the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
The Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building, Room 130, hosts exhibitions by faculty, students, and invited artists. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; visitors should call for hours on weekends. The Bryan and Jessie Metcalf Gallery on the second floor of the Tam Alumni Center hosts a variety of exhibits that can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
A lush garden atrium is located on the main floor of the Juanita Greer White Life Sciences Building. The building is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and closed major holidays.
The Eugene Warner Reflecting Pool is a landscaped area and reflecting pool near the northwest corner of the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building. The pool was a gift from Eugene Warner, who wanted to provide a place for quiet contemplation.
The Flashlight, a 38-foot-tall, 74,000-pound steel sculpture, stands on the plaza between Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall and the Judy Bayley Theatre at the northern end of campus. The sculpture was fashioned by internationally acclaimed artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
A full-scale replica of the H-1 Racer, a record-setting plane flown by Howard Hughes, is suspended from the ceiling of the Great Hall of Engineering in the Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex.
The James R. Dickinson Library, which is open to the public, contains nearly 2 million items in a variety of formats ranging from books to photographs. The library's special collections department maintains collections of material on the state of Nevada and its development, including photographs, oral history tapes, maps, and manuscripts. Also included there are menus, the university archives, and a renowned collection on gaming.
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History features a display of many species of live creatures from the Mojave Desert, including desert tortoises, mammals, snakes, spiders, and lizards. Other permanent and traveling exhibits are presented as well. The museum is open 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and major holidays. Admission is free.
The Performing Arts Center, which includes Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall and the Judy Bayley Theatre, is located at the northern end of the Academic Mall. The concert hall is the scene of regularly scheduled concerts, including the Charles Vanda Master Series. The theatre stages plays and dance concerts featuring student, faculty, and local talent. The Black Box Theatre and Paul Harris Theatre, located in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building, are settings for still other campus productions and musical concerts.
The Donald C. Moyer Student Union houses several specialty restaurants, the bookstore, a games room, study lounges, a ballroom, meeting rooms, student government offices, the student I.D. center, a TV/video room, the outdoor recreation office, and an information desk. The offices of the biweekly student paper, "The Rebel Yell," and KUNV radio station (91.5 FM) are also located in the union.
The Thomas & Mack Center, an 18,500-seat indoor arena, is home of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÍòÄÜ¿Æ´ó Runnin' Rebels. It also hosts other sporting events, concerts, family shows, and ice shows.
