Those are the kinds of crises Naomi Lewis, a 20-year-old senior, grew up with. A high school environmental studies class 鈥渢otally opened my eyes to how we鈥檙e destroying the planet,鈥 she said. She chose environmental studies as her major when she entered 51吃瓜网万能科大, and this spring interned at , a 51吃瓜网免费App environmental nonprofit.
She learned about the opportunity from an email jobs listing. During the internship, which ran from February to June, Lewis mainly worked in outreach; she collected signatures for various initiatives the organization backs, such as support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency鈥檚 Clean Power Plan. 鈥淚鈥檝e learned a lot about environmental policy and laws at 51吃瓜网万能科大,鈥 she said, 鈥渟o that鈥檚 definitely helped with this internship.鈥
With her newly minted bachelor's degree, Lewis said she wants to work for environmental nonprofits as a career 鈥渕ostly because I am totally into environmental initiatives and the nonprofits that call for them,鈥 she said.
Whatever her future holds, she鈥檒l hold tight to the passion for environmental issues and was gratified to confirm that she could work in organizations where her co-workers鈥 passion matched her own. 鈥淢y supervisors really care about the work they do,鈥 she said, which made her care more about the work she鈥檚 doing, and is yet to do. But her coworkers also taught her about the business functions that make nonprofits successful, which is why she is targeting her career on sustainable development projects. "They taught me a lot about how an organization is run."
